Statement
Nicole Deponte is a visual artist whose work spans surreal mixed media collage and abstract painting. Trained as a sculptor (BFA, Massachusetts College of Art and Design), Deponte has worked professionally as an artist since 2003. Her practice is rooted in the intuitive—each piece a dialogue between materials, gesture, and the subconscious.
Her current body of work includes original collage paintings and drawings on paper, as well as abstract paintings on canvas. Merging watercolor, gouache, ink, and hand-cut collage, Deponte constructs layered visual narratives that dwell in liminal space—where landscapes become bodies, and figures emerge like half-remembered dreams.
This work is deeply shaped by a personal experience of synesthesia, a perceptual phenomenon where sound, color, and memory become intertwined. These sensory crossings serve as a guide: a chord might conjure a texture; a memory, a palette. The resulting compositions are emotionally charged and symbolically open—less meant to be deciphered than felt.
Resisting rigid structure, her process is one of intuitive unfolding. Each decision is a response to the last, allowing a poetic ambiguity to remain. The outcome is a symbolic, sensorial world that invites quiet contemplation and deeper recognition—where myth, memory, and abstraction meet.
